NetworkManager and WPA Enterprise (eduroam) problems – „association took too long“

I’ve noticed connection problems when using the ‚eduroam‘ network of universities. It uses a WPA Enterprise encryption method (PEAP with MSCHAP v2). With NetworkManager and my Intel WiFi card (using iwlegacy / iwl3945), the connection times out a lot and it also won’t connect sometimes.
